The Importance of Developing your Intuition as an HSP
Intuition is often thought of as mysterious. Sometimes it’s a gut feeling, sometimes you just know something without knowing why…but how? Few people realize that there are many types of intuition, that intuition is a sense that we all have (the “sixth sense”), and that there are skills you may practice which support you in developing intuition. Furthermore, the earlier you start focusing on and developing your intuition, the easier it is to access intuitive information. This is one reason I am so passionate about working with children as an intuitive, because I want to support them in gaining confidence in their intuition and feeling comfortable incorporating it into their daily lives.
The dictionary defines intuition as “the ability to understand something immediately without the need for conscious reasoning.” I also like to refer to intuition as the act of tapping into our innate wisdom. Many HSP’s are naturally intuitive. For example, we can immediately tell what someone near us is feeling, or we may sense what someone needs without them having to say it. Since HSP’s process the world around us so deeply, it is not surprising that we are picking up subtle information that others miss. While this is a gift of being an HSP, many also feel it can be a curse: the sheer amount of information we pick up on may feel overwhelming, and it can sometimes be difficult to assert boundaries around what we let in and what we keep out of our awareness.
The good news is that the more you practice skills to develop your intuition, the easier it becomes to turn your intuition on and off so to speak, or to feel like you have control over what information you allow to enter your personal space and what information stays out. This is important for HSP’s because we generally walk through the world feeling unprotected and overwhelmed by everything coming at us, which can lead to feelings of victimization and emotional reactivity. Cultivating your intuitive practice, therefore, supports you in feeling more grounded, joyful, creative and empowered. You feel more in charge of your personal space, more confident in what you know, and more trust in yourself and the world around you.
In my training at the Academy of Intuition Medicine®, I learned that there were 21 intuitive skills* that I could access at any given time. Some came more naturally to me than others, and some were more or less interesting to me than others, but it was exciting to know that there were so many ways I could gather intuitive information. My training also taught me the basics I have covered in previous blogs, namely: grounding, boundaries, and centering. Putting these together with the goal of connecting more to my innate wisdom, has been an incredibly empowering journey for me. Though there are still times when I may feel overwhelmed by input from my environment, I have skills to practice which immediately shift me into a more grounded and calm state. I also have a deep awareness of myself that enhances my ability to regulate my emotions and advocate for my own needs.
Imagine if you and your family members had the tools to honor each other’s intuition, respect each other’s energy boundaries and feel grounded around each other throughout the day. Imagine how your communication would improve, how your relationship would deepen, and how you could advocate for everyone’s needs to be better met. Developing your intuition brings you to a more intimate knowledge of yourself and your family members, empowers you to follow your inner guidance, and connects you to the wiser parts of yourself on a regular basis.
